Winners of the Mosman Park Art and Photographic Awards

An evocative portrait of a local musician standing outside Memorial Hall captured the attention of judges and viewers alike at the 2009 Mosman Park Art Awards exhibition.

The haunting oil painting, “En Route to Camelot” by Greg Longman, was unanimously chosen by the judging panel from a record 189 artworks for the $4000 first prize in the open art category at this year’s awards.  Also among the winners was local artist Mary-Jane Malet for her sweeping beach scene “Daylight Saving, Mosman Park Beach”, which received second prize of $2,000.  Valerie Anderson was awarded third prize for “Mosman Park”, while rising star Fiona Burrows was highly commended for “Mosman Bay Roots”.

Iona students Claire Jay and Jasmine Hegney won first prize and a commendation respectively in the 21 and under art category.

In the open photographic category, last year’s winner Abigail Harman once again was selected for the $1,000 first prize for her lyrical portrait of Mosman Park local “Peter Robbins of Glyde Street”, while Mark Evans was highly commended for his piece “Mosman Artist’s Reflection”.  Up and coming photographer Ryan Epstein received first prize in the 21 and under photographic category, while Phillipa Nilant was highly commended.

Over 300 people attended the awards presentation and exhibition opening on Saturday 9 May at Memorial Hall in Mosman Park.  Record numbers of sales were registered as exhibition-goers snapped up their own piece of Mosman Park, with purchase prices ranging from $4,000 to $45.

The always popular junior section of the exhibition once again compelled viewers’ attention, with over 400 entries received from local schools including Mosman Park Primary, Mosman Park Pre-Primary, Cottesloe Primary, St Hilda’s Junior School and Presbyterian Ladies College.
