Swimming Pools Private

Planning approval and building licence approval is required to be granted by the Town prior to installing a swimming pool or spa.

Swimming Pool/Spa Security Requirements

The Building Act 2011 requires the local government to inspect the land and swimming pool periodically for compliance with the regulations so that not more than four years elapses between inspections.

Swimming pool fencing or security barriers must comply, depending on the date of installation, with the following:

Swimming pool Installed prior to 4 November 2001

Isolation security fence, boundary fence or residence wall or other barrier required to be maintained. Sliding or hinged swinging doors opening from residence into the swimming pool area must not be fitted with hand or footholds and must be fitted with a self closing latching device, with latch release not less that 1.5m above floor level, to return door to closed position. Windows to residence which open into the swimming pool area with sill less that 1.2m above floor are not permitted to open more than 100mm or be totally covered by mesh screen or bars or permanently fixed (key locking of windows is not acceptable).

 

Swimming pool Installed from 5 November 2001 onwards

Isolation security fence, or boundary fence or residence wall or other barrier required to be maintained. No door from the residence is permitted to open into the swimming pool area. Windows opening from the residence into the swimming pool area with sill less that 1.2m above the floor are not permitted to open more than 100mm or be totally covered by mesh screen or bars or permanently fixed (key locking of windows is not acceptable).

Note: Pool water must not be emptied or backflushed into streets, right-of-ways or adjoining land.
