Public buildings

Public buildings

A public building is defined as a place where members of the public usually or occasionally assemble and includes public events. Public buildings are governed by the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911 and the Health (Public Buildings) Regulations 1992.

Environmental Health Officers are responsible for the approval and regular assessment of all public buildings in conjunction with relevant agencies. Public buildings are assessed on their type of use, maximum number of persons permitted at any one time, and public safety.

Where public buildings are to be constructed, extended or altered they require environmental health approval and may be subject to planning approval and a building permit application.
