Fauna Surveys helps us identify introduced species that may be impacting on our native wildlife either as predators or by competing for resources like food and nesting hollows.
A Fauna Survey was carried out towards the end of 2022 within four of the Town’s natural areas:
- Bay View Park
- Chidley Point Reserve
- Minim Cove Park
- Buckland Hill Reserve
This survey was designed to provide a snapshot of the kinds of fauna that can be found locally, and to help guide our environmental management plans and revegetation works in to the future.
It is important to maintain healthy bushland areas to provide habitat, food sources and breeding sites for our native species. As the needs of each species differ so to the techniques used to uncover them. These methods include the use of trapping (using both Line Traps and Elliot Traps), motion detecting trail cameras, spotlighting at night and searching for evidence of activity like tracks and digging.
The following species were identified during the survey:
-

Although the list of species found is extensive it is not considered conclusive as many species that move around their ranges, migrate or are simply very good at hiding and may not have be counted in the survey. Identifying these species can assist us with planning control programs or help guide local policy.
The results of the survey were presented at a Community Forum in February 2023. The data was presented by the Environmental Scientists from Natural Area Management Services who carried out the survey. You can download the slideshow from the evening here.
