Herbicide use

Over the last few years, we have been reducing herbicide use in the Town.

We’ve been working hard to modify treatments regimes, trial alternative products and undertake manual weed removal where practically reasonable.

Town contractors use Spearhead to control broad-leaf weeds in turf grass once a year. We also use Fusilade as an alternative to Glyphosate to control grasses.

We acknowledge and understand the attention that has been drawn to the environmental and human health effects of herbicides – specifically, Glyphosate (which is the active ingredient in products such as Roundup). At this time, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) deems the product suitable for application in public places, if followed as per the instructions and in accordance with the application guidelines.

The Town will be reviewing its Herbicide Policy shortly – more updates on this will follow.

Glyphosate use in the Town

We no longer allow the spraying of Glyphosate in our parks, playgrounds, streetscapes, footpaths, round-a-bouts and kerbs.

Trials

Even so, we remain committed to trialling alternative methods to manage weeds in the Town.

New products are being developed and released onto the market. In order to ascertain the effectiveness of these products, there will be the need for ongoing trialling to determine their applicability to the Town of Mosman Park.
