If you’ve been down to Chidley Point, Minim Cove Jetty, or the Johnston Street Boat Ramp recently, you may have noticed new signs along the river. These signs are here to raise awareness about Alexandrium algal blooms – a naturally occurring event that can affect the safety of fishing and shellfish collection in the Swan and Canning Rivers.
Alexandrium blooms made their first appearance in 2019, when toxin levels in mussels and crab guts rose above safe consumption guidelines. Since then, these blooms have been observed each year. While they are a normal part of the river ecosystem, certain conditions can cause toxin levels to increase, which is why it’s important for the community to stay informed.
To help with this, the Town of Mosman Park has installed signs at three key locations along the river. These signs provide guidance on when it may not be safe to fish or collect shellfish.

By paying attention to these signs and staying informed, our community can continue to enjoy the Swan and Canning Rivers safely while helping to protect this important local environment.
