Pet registration or renewal

Cat Registration/Breeder Application Form

Important to note:

  • when a cat is sold, re-homed, lost/stolen or deceased, it is the registered owner’s responsibility to provide the Town with this information within 28 days. Download the Update of Animal Ownership form here and send it back to us
  • if your cat is found in or on another person’s property, the property owner may request an Authorised Officer (Ranger) to impound the cat and remove it from the property
  • if the cat has not been sterilised or micro-chipped, the owner of that cat commits an offence. Cat owners that are not compliant with these requirements, after 1 November 2013 may be liable to fines of up to $5,000
  • under certain circumstances, an exemption can be granted by a Vet permitting a cat to not be sterilised or micro chipped. The Town will require documentation from your Vet advising that the procedure would have a negative effect on your cat’s health.

Breeding Cats

The legislation requires that a person who chooses to breed cats must apply to their local government for a permit. When a cat is sold, the seller must ensure the cat is micro-chipped and sterilised prior to transfer. If the cat cannot be sterilised due to its young age, a voucher must be issued to the new owner.

Only approved breeders will be exempt from sterilisation laws.

Recommendations for Responsible Owners

The Town of Mosman Park recommends cat owners follow these steps to ensure the welfare of their pet and our native wildlife:

  • keep your cat indoors between dusk and dawn. This helps to protect both your cat and native flora and fauna. The risks posed to cats greatly increase when they roam beyond the home. They include hazards like road accidents, dog attacks, fighting with feral cats, picking up parasites or diseases, being bitten by snakes or exposure to poisons
  • contain your cat to your property by installing a cat proof fence or an outdoor cat enclosure
  • when away from home or on holiday make sure to arrange for a responsible person to care for their cat or place their cat in a boarding facility that can look after their needs.

For more information on how to keep your cat safe and happy in the home the RSPCA has put together guides here and here.

To renew your pet registration, you must attach a copy of certificates for Microchipping & Sterilisation. Pet registrations expire 31 October each year. Renewed registrations commence 1 November each year.

The Town will waive pet registration fees for September and October 2024.

This two month amnesty on fees is only available for new, one-year registrations (not renewals) on your dog and/or cat. We will send out pet registration renewals prior to 1 November 2024. Cats must be sterilised in order to be registered.

Not only is pet registration legally required (you’ll avoid a $200 fine), it will also help us reunite lost pets with their owner’s much more quickly.

  • We no longer offer free pet registration for pensioners, however eligible pensioners can receive 50% discount off the applicable fee, whether their pet is desexed or not.
  • Current Pensioner Concession Card, Pensioner State Concession Card, Veteran’s Pensioner Card or Health Care Card must be provided along with the Desexing certificate, microchip certificate and completed Registration form (available at the bottom of this page).
  • Remember, cats must be sterilised in order to be registered.

Under the Dog Amendment Regulations 2017 (amendments to Dog Regulations 2013), refunds are available to dog owners who have registered their dogs before they were sterilised.
