Beach Emergency Number (BEN) signs installed along the river in Mosman Park

Five new Beach Emergency Number (BEN) signs have been installed at popular riverfront areas within the Town of Mosman Park. This project was a collaboration between the Town of Mosman Park and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), which funded the signs under the BEN program. These signs, in addition to the three installed at Mosman Beach in 2021, will improve safety in the waters around Mosman Park.

Each BEN sign has a unique code as well as detailed location information. In emergencies, first responders should call Triple Zero (000) and provide the code and location from the nearest BEN sign. This ensures faster response times for ambulance, police, or fire services. Whenever possible, someone should stay at the sign to guide emergency crews upon arrival.

The signs are located at the following locations:

  1. Swan Canoe Club
  2. The Coombe
  3. Green Place Reserve
  4. Chidley Point Reserve
  5. Minim Cove Jetty

DPIRD Shark Response Manager Michael Burke said all local governments around WA who’ve supported BEN signs have made a significant contribution to community safety.

“The unique code on each BEN sign and associated location information is integrated into response systems so emergency services can attend the location as quickly as possible,” Mr Burke said.

BEN signs can also be used to report shark sightings, which will help Town of Mosman Park rangers to instate beach closures earlier by using this accurate location information. The new signs are reversable and can also display Beach Closed messaging when required.

Beach and river users are also encouraged to download the SharkSmart WA app to stay informed and report shark sightings to the Water Police on 9442 8600.
