Buckland Hill designated a Threatened Ecological Community

Buckland Hill has long been a sanctuary for a diverse array of native animals and unique plant species.

It is also home to the Tawny Frog Mouth, Spiny Tailed Geckos, Quendas, and boasts the presence of the Rottnest Island Tea Tree and Pine. However, these precious residents are currently at risk of being entirely wiped out, leading to the designation of Buckland Hill as a Threatened Ecological Community (TEC).

We have recently observed activities involving the use of BMX bikes by a group of school children in the Buckland Hill area. These activities, while filled with youthful energy and adventure, have unfortunately resulted in the chopping down of vegetation and the digging of holes, causing extensive harm to this fragile ecosystem.

The well-being of the unique creatures and plants that call Buckland Hill home is now under threat due to these actions.

In light of these concerns and with a deep commitment to safeguarding Buckland Hill’s ecological richness, we have made the difficult decision to initiate a cleanup effort today next to Swansea Park, removing the unapproved BMX track.

While we wholeheartedly encourage our young adventurers to explore the great outdoors, it is paramount that these activities are conducted with profound respect for the environment and the preservation of our natural surroundings, particularly in areas as special as Buckland Hill.

We understand that this decision may be disappointing and disheartening to many of you, especially families and children who enjoy Buckland Hill.

We are keenly aware of the demand for spaces where the youngest members of our community can play and explore, including BMX facilities. Your valuable feedback from our recent Community Needs Analysis has shown us the importance of meeting these needs.

Have your say

To address these concerns and shape a brighter and more sustainable future for Mosman Park, we are actively seeking your input.

Our draft Public Open Space (POS) Strategy is currently open for public comment, and we invite you to share your thoughts. The draft POS Strategy already emphasises the importance of providing areas for young people to engage in physical and recreational activity, in line with the Town’s Sport and Recreation Plan 2017-2027. However, we believe there is always room for more suggestions, and we encourage you to have your say.

Our draft POS Strategy will be presented to Council later this year, taking into consideration your valuable input on how we can make our public open spaces more aligned with community needs while ensuring the safety and well-being of our environment. If you’d like to participate in the draft POS Strategy consultation, please visit yoursay.mosmanpark.wa.gov.au/POS or join us at our in-person community engagement events throughout October and November.

We deeply appreciate your understanding and your support in ensuring that we continue to serve the needs of our community in a relevant, sustainable, and meaningful way. Together, we can strike a balance that fosters outdoor adventure while preserving the natural treasures that make our community so special.
