Council adopts 2022-23 budget with global pressures and community needs front of mind

Council has adopted its budget for 2022/23, representing key initiatives that aim to deliver on locally led solutions that address road congestion, safe beach access and proper planning and development.

In lieu of major capital works projects and big-ticket items, the no-frills budget aims to contain operating costs and allow the Town to focus on boldly advocating for state and federal funding.

Rates will increase by 5.9 per cent which – while still below projected inflation of 7.6 per cent – is necessary to maintain services to a high standard, while balancing legal and policy requirements and community needs.

Mayor Paul Shaw said considerable thought and time has been invested into delivering a budget that balances fiscal responsibility, financial sustainability and community expectations in line with the Strategic Community Plan 2021-2031.

“We know people are already doing it tough in the community. Global pressures are having the same hip pocket consequences on the Town and we have to pass on these costs to keep delivering the vital services our community relies upon,” said Mayor Shaw.

“A key initiative from this budget includes advocating for much-needed funding to flow into our communities. With state and federal funding support, we can deliver safer roads, well-planned development and enhance liveability for our residents.”

“The reality is, local councils are operating in an increasingly complex and highly regulated environment where rising global costs and limited revenue are pitted against ratepayer expectations to do more with less.”

With only 42% rateable properties in Mosman Park, the Town will continue to optimise council services and internal functions, as well as drive inter-council collaboration to share expertise and resources and create efficiencies.

The $13.9M annual budget for the 2022/23 financial year was endorsed by Council at a Special Council Meeting on 29 June.
