Town of Mosman Park is moving to a no-ward system to allow councillors represent and advocate for all residents and ratepayers and adopt a ‘one-town’ approach to decision making.

Council gave the green light to abolish the North and South Ward at the December 2020 Ordinary Council Meeting, following public consultation which saw the majority in favour of the abolition.

The decision ends almost 60 years of ward representation at the same time Mosman Park was declared a Town in 1962.

Removing the wards will give a vital opportunity for all residents to vote and run in local elections. Councillors will also be able to pool their diverse skills and gain a deeper understanding of issues that affect all parts of the community.

Mayor Brett Pollock said the decision echoes the Town’s draft Strategic Community Plan’s vision and mission to be an inclusive and truly engaged community.

“Our close-knit and compact Town is what makes Mosman Park unique. By removing the wards, we are coming together as one. We’re uniting and fostering a warm sense of community so that everyone feels connected and welcome,” Mayor Pollock said.

“Tangible and positive change for our community can only happen when there’s progressive change such as this – we need to be advocating for the interests of electors, residents and ratepayers of the district, and not just for those in our wards.”

The abolition of the North and South Ward will come into effect at the Local Government elections in October.

There are no financial implications or impact on future demographic shifts from moving to a no-wards structure.

Council will continue to comprise six elected members and a popularly elected Mayor to act in the best interests of the entire community.
