Local everyday heroes recognised on Australia Day

From a much-loved community postmaster to a local environmental hero – Mosman Park, meet your 2023 Citizens of the Year.

2023 Community Citizen of the Year – Hengky Pratama

Hengky has been a key figure in the Mosman Park community since he took up the position of Postmaster at 50 Harvey Street in 2008. Hengky goes above and beyond the duties required of an Australia Post agent. His unwavering commitment and efforts in the Mosman Park community hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Hengky provides services to many of the older and vulnerable residents in Mosman Park, enabling them to access use online applications and access digital media. Without his efforts and dedication many would be unable to access these pivotal online services.

Hengky has shown how connected and inspiring the community can be. He has even prepared and delivered home cooked meals to the sick and elderly.

Hengky creates a secure and friendly environment for the community. His conversation, trustworthiness and gracious manner has made a community hub. He is integral to the community and valued by all who visit the Mosman Park LPO and this is what makes Hengky truly deserving of Mosman Park’s 2023 Citizen of the Year.

2023 Senior Community Citizen of the Year – Ruth Lilly

At age 76, Ruth has been contributing to her community widely and consistently.

Ruth is an active volunteer for the Friends of Mosman Park Bushland, a River Guardian, a member of the Mosman Park Bowling Club where she maintains the clubhouse gardens, and a valued member of the Mosman Park Choir (the Mighty Camelot Chorale).

Since Ruth joined the Friends of Mosman Park Bushland in 2009 she has racked up nearly 2000 hours of time volunteering – from caring for the bush to contributing to morning tea’s, Ruth has been there to lend a hand.

Ruth further contributes to conservation efforts in Mosman Park through her role as a River Garden. In this role Ruth has spent the last five years emptying Reel it in bins on the Mosman Park and Garangup jetties. These bins reduce the plastic and fishing waste that get into the swan river and along with two of her colleagues, Ruth has been instrumental in clearing them weekly.

At the Mosman park bowling club Ruth has taken on some of the responsibility of upgrading and maintaining the gardens surrounding the clubhouse and car park. And as a member of the local choir Ruth has performed at various local events and done her best to welcome and support new members.

2023 Active Citizenship – Wellington Wishes

Wellington Wishes has created a vibrant space to connect the Mosman Park community.

After forming a town team, this strip of shops have taken it upon themselves to host the Seasons Streetings event in December 2021 and 2022.

Through food, live music, pop-up retailers and family activities, Wellington Wishes has embodied the meaning of vibrant communities and brought this area of Mosman Park to life.

This initiative has gone a long way to creating the opportunity for local artists and groups to showcase their talents while fostering community connection and creating a sense of belonging.
