The Town has secured funding through the Riverbank Program to address ongoing erosion and enhance the ecological health of Point Roe Park. The funding will support a range of restoration efforts aimed at stabilising the riverbank, improving local habitats, and boosting biodiversity, ensuring the park’s long-term sustainability.
The project will focus on several key initiatives:
- Improve embankment stabilisation to prevent further degradation at Point Roe;
- Revegetate the area by planting of 400 tube stock (local native species);
- Improve connectivity of bushland for the future of local flora and fauna; and
- Restore ecological value and enhance visual amenity of the reserve.
Scheduled to begin in May 2025, the works will take advantage of the winter rains to ensure the new plantings establish successfully. This project is part of the Town’s broader commitment to rehabilitating Point Roe Park, as outlined in the Point Roe Park Environmental Management Plan 2019-2029.
Located along the lower reaches of the Swan River Estuary, Point Roe Park has faced increasing pressure from both human activity and environmental factors, making it vulnerable to erosion. The Riverbank Program funding will allow the Town to address these challenges and improve the park’s resilience. Additionally, this project aligns with the three broad objectives of the Riverbank Program:
- To protect and enhance riverbanks and shorelines to mitigate threats to environmental, recreational, aesthetic or cultural values;
- To protect, enhance and manage fringing indigenous vegetation and habitat; and
- To improve enjoyment of the foreshore by addressing risk to public amenity values, safety, infrastructure and environment.
Once completed, the project will provide a critical habitat for local plant and animal species, helping to further strengthen the already thriving ecosystem at Point Roe Park. The area has long been a hub for community engagement, with regular plantings and environmental education programs held throughout the year.
We look forward to furthering Point Roe’s ecological value with the help of this grant thanks to Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
