Removal of Diving Platform in Mosman Bay

The Town will be removing the diving board in Mosman Bay on 20 December. Unfortunately, due to age, the deteriorated structure is no longer safe to use.

In February 2023, the Department of Transport Maritime conducted a comprehensive inspection of the small diving board in Mosman Bay (indicated in yellow below).

The inspection revealed several critical areas of non-compliance that raised significant concerns about the safety and structural integrity of the diving board:

Wood Rot: The presence of wood rot was detected, compromising the overall strength and durability of the structure.

Loose Decking: Sections of the decking were found to be loose, posing a potential hazard to users.

Broken or Missing Cross Members: Essential cross members crucial for the stability of the diving board were either broken or missing.

Damaged Piles: The foundational piles supporting the structure were damaged, further compromising its stability.

Subsequently, the Town took proactive measures to address these concerns as our primary focus remains on preventing potential risks posed to our community.

We commissioned Jetty and Marine Construction to conduct a thorough examination of the entire jetty. The detailed report provided crucial insights into the condition of the structure, emphasising the precarious state of several key components.

The inspection report highlighted the following critical findings:

  • Various components of the swim platform were in an extremely deteriorated state or had failed outright.
  • The structural integrity had been severely compromised due to the failure of vertical diagonal bracings.
  • Visible timber rot was pervasive across all areas of the structure, indicating a significant degradation of the timber materials used.
  • As the dive platform is in the middle of a mooring control area, the Department of Transport Maritime will not permit it to be replaced in the same location.

In light of this, and the above findings, the Town has made the decision to remove the diving board later this month to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who uses community amenities.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we take necessary measures to prioritise the safety of our community and integrity of our public spaces.
