Tom Perrott Playground – environmental testing and site safety

The Town of Mosman Park is committed to ensuring that all public spaces are safe, well-maintained and managed responsibly. Construction works at Tom Perrott Playground have been temporarily paused following the discovery of discoloured soil during excavation for shade sail installation.

By taking a cautious and transparent approach, the Town is prioritising community safety while working with environmental specialists to confirm that the area remains safe for public use.

During recent deep excavation works, red-coloured soil was identified at the site. As a precaution, the area was immediately closed, vacated, and the spoil mound securely covered while soil samples were sent for laboratory testing.

Testing confirmed that one deep soil sample contained arsenic levels above the recommended guidelines for this type of land use. A second sample, taken from the spoil mound, was within safe limits. No other contaminants were found to exceed health or environmental standards.

The Town has worked closely with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and followed best-practice environmental protocols throughout the process.

Actions taken:

  • Immediate closure and secure covering of the affected area (completed)
  • Laboratory testing of soil samples by accredited specialists (completed)
  • Removing and safe disposal of impacted soil at an appropriate facility
  • Ongoing environmental testing to confirm the area is safe before works resume

Construction will not recommence until all safety and environmental checks confirm the site is suitable for public use.

Next steps

Removal of the soil at Tom Perrott Playground is currently being arranged as a matter of urgency. Further testing will then be completed to confirm that the area is safe before construction resumes. The red-coloured soil identified at Tom Perrott Playground has not been observed at any other locations across Mosman Park.

A summary of the soil testing results and remediation plan will be made available once further testing is complete.

The Town will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
