WA Plan for Plastics Stage 2

Mosman Park businesses are being urged to begin phasing out the following single-use plastic items before stage 2 of the WA Plan for Plastics comes into effect on 27 February.

  • loose and moulded expanded polystyrene packaging
  • degradable plastics (plastics designed to break up more rapidly into fragments under certain conditions).
  • produce bags
  • expanded polystyrene cups and food trays for raw meat and seafood
  • coffee cups and lids
  • lids for cups, bowls, trays, plates and takeaway food containers
  • trays for takeaway food not covered in the Stage 1 ban
  • cotton buds with plastic stems
  • microbeads.

Enforcement of Stage 2 regulations will start from 1 September 2023 for select items and materials. Under the plan, stage 2 will finalise July 2025.

There are transition periods for the phase-out of Stage 2 items to allow businesses to run down supplies and make plans for alternative processes and packaging. The transition period for each item is listed here

If you own or run a local business in Mosman Park and think you will be impacted by the WA Plan for Plastics, it’s important to read up so you don’t run the risk of being fined once stage 2 legislation passes.

If you’re a community member, we highly encourage you to opt for reusables each time you are out shopping or dining at a local cafe. Every little action helps take the pressure off businesses to supply the (often more expensive) green single-use alternatives.
