Youth-led placemaking puts Mosman Park on the map

In an impressive display of innovation, creativity, and community spirit, a group of 16-24 year old residents have taken on the task of reimagining the public space near the Alf Adams Pavillion. Through the art of placemaking, these young local residents have successfully transformed the area into a vibrant hub where young people and the community at large can connect and engage.

The placemaking project goes beyond the benefit of young people alone. By activating and placemaking, the revamped space now offers a myriad of possibilities for the entire community. This inclusive initiative will open doors to a wide range of events, workshops, pop-up shops, and performances, ensuring that the space serves as a dynamic centre for all residents to enjoy.

One of the notable improvements includes the re-evaluation and refurbishment of the skate ramp area. We are pleased to announce that the skate ramp will be returning soon, providing young enthusiasts with a place to practise their skills and showcase their talent. Additionally, the project incorporates a shipping container, which will serve a dual purpose by hosting various events and pop-ups, further fostering connections and engagement within the community.

This initiative embodies a commitment to innovation, creativity, and sustainability. The team has employed the use of temporary Wikiblock furniture, a unique solution that requires no glue, screws, or nails for construction. Furthermore, eye-catching floor murals and painted paths have been strategically implemented to breathe new life into the area, creating a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere that will leave a lasting impression.

Importantly, this endeavour gives young people in Mosman Park a much-needed voice and outlet for self-expression. It empowers them to lead positive community change in alignment with RAC’s vision for a safer, more sustainable, and connected community. Furthermore, it provides valuable opportunities for the youth to build local networks, gain work experience, acquire new skills, and receive recognition for their exceptional efforts. The sense of pride and accomplishment that accompanies the act of improving their local area is immeasurable.

This exciting project would not have been possible without the invaluable support and collaboration of Better Block Org, RAC, and Town Team Movement.
