Town commits to reduce glyphosate spraying

Glyphosate is no longer sprayed in parks, playgrounds, streetscapes, footpaths, round-a-bouts and street kerbs, thanks to operational changes and a commitment by the Town of Mosman Park to reduce the use of herbicides.

These measures also mean residents no longer need to register their verge on the Town’s no-spraying list.

Manual and mechanical methods are being used to manage weeds where reasonably practical. If herbicides are required, alternatives such as Fusilade and Spearhead are used in place of glyphosate.

Mayor Brett Pollock said although approved herbicides are considered to be an important part of the holistic weed management approach, the Town understands how important a reduction in glyphosate use is to the community.

“The first important step we’ve taken is to reduce our reliance on glyphosate. It’s great news for those who live, work or visit Mosman Park – places like our playgrounds, footpaths and kerbs are no longer sprayed with glyphosate,” said Mayor Pollock.

“We’re committed to building on these fantastic measures by continually identifying and implementing practical and financially sustainable ways to manage weeds. For example, we are trialling organic herbicides throughout the Town, with the next trial to take place at Mt Lyell bushland in April.”

Since April 2020, significant operational changes have been implemented at the Town to reduce the use of glyphosate in the Town.
