Minim Pond

Minim Ponds is an artificial wetland managed by the Town.

It has historically received supplementary water from an external source. This water supply is currently limited, and together with seasonal environmental conditions, it means the ponds may look different from what visitors are used to.

What is the Town doing about it?

  • We will continue to maintain water in the ponds through periodic top-ups where required.
  • Water use is carefully managed to balance environmental outcomes, asset protection, and responsible groundwater use.
  • Algae can occur naturally in wetland environments, particularly during periods of warm weather and reduced water circulation.
  • The Town is undertaking baseline water quality monitoring to better understand current conditions.
  • Longer-term options for supplementary water supply are being investigated.

Why are the water levels lower than usual?
Minim Ponds historically received supplementary water through an agreement with an external provider. This arrangement is no longer operating consistently, resulting in lower water levels than residents may have seen in previous years.

Why doesn’t the Town simply fill the ponds?
The Town currently supplements the ponds using its own groundwater allocation when required. However, groundwater is a valuable and limited resource, and its use must be carefully managed. The Town seeks to balance environmental, amenity and water conservation outcomes.

Why is there algae in the ponds?
Algae is a natural feature of many wetland environments. Growth can increase during warmer weather and when water levels are lower or water movement is reduced.

Is the algae harmful?
Not all algae is harmful. The Town is undertaking water quality monitoring to better understand current conditions and identify any potential risks. Appropriate actions will be taken if any concerns are identified.

Is there a risk to wildlife?
The Town regularly monitors the condition of the ponds and is commencing water quality testing as part of a broader assessment of current conditions. Any significant risks identified through monitoring will be managed accordingly.

The Town will continue to monitor the ponds and take additional management actions if required. Any long-term solution will need to balance environmental outcomes, water availability, and financial sustainability.

Minim Ponds is a much-loved local place, which is why we’re committed to caring for its environmental values while exploring practical options for the future.
