Good to FOGO

Mosman Park has moved to a three-bin FOGO system for all standalone dwellings, and is currently transitioning to a FOGO system for unit complexes.

What is FOGO?

FOGO stands for Food Organics Garden Organics.

Residents can now place their food scraps (bread, dairy, fruit, vegetables, meat, bones and seafood) and garden waste (prunings and leaves) into their 240L lime-green lidded FOGO bin.

The addition of FOGO bins has reduced the amount of waste the Town sends to landfill, by diverting organic waste to be produced into high-quality compost. Sending organic waste to landfill is a problem as it breaks down to produce methane, a harmful greenhouse gas which is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Instead, turning organic waste into compost reduces the impact on the environment, while returning valuable nutrients back into the soil.

You can purchase bags of FOGO-derived compost at the West Metro Recycling Centre. This product is certified to Australian Standard AS 4454 and contains about 20-25% FOGO material. The rest is comprised of natural minerals and green and agricultural waste to make a rich dig-in product for your garden.

When did FOGO start?

FOGO bin collections in the Town of Mosman Park, commenced on 14 August 2023. Under the State Government’s Waste Strategy, all metropolitan councils will need to introduce the new three-bin FOGO system by 2025.
